The Radical Innovation Sprint 2018 reaches the finishing line – but it does not stop here

At the RIS 2018 Close Out Day, the participants of the Radical Innovation Sprint 2018 were applauded. 13 groups presented their projects, their learnings and findings. While sharing their findings the participants at the same time challenged each other to increase the potential of using their results for further research.

All projects in Radical Innovation Sprint 2018 have two common denominator: they are all applicable for the Danish Part of the North Sea and they are all radical! That was clear from the presentation of the final results of the sprint period.

The Radical Innovation Sprint does not require the researcher to have prior knowledge of the oil and gas industry. It is an intense and challenging three-month project that pushes its participants to go outside their comfort zone and think outside the box. With support from DHRTC Technology Maturation, the researchers gain insight in the industry while exploring their ideas and methods – and no idea is too crazy or too radical. 

Steep learning curve
The nature of the Radical Innovation Programme provides the participants with a steep learning curve. One of the participants, Hans Henning Stutz, Assistant Professor at Aarhus University, participated with not only one, but two, RIS projects. When asked about the best part of the sprint, he said;

“It was fun. It challenged my usual way of doing things. It is an opportunity to choose and try something risky, but doing it in a very small amount of time pressures you to leave your comfort zone.”

In terms of future work, Hans Henning Stutz added that,

“I got to work with some areas that were completely new to me which definitely have made me richer and enhanced my knowledge in a way that will allow me to explore outside my field in future work.”

The nature of the RIS programme pushes its participants into a creative process that challenges the way we address and think about problems, solutions and methods. Moreover, the short duration inspires to collaboration both within and across disciplines in order to explore the radical idea to the greatest extent. 

Interdisciplinary research
While many of the project groups involved several researchers, a few took collaboration even further as they collaborated not only across disciplines but also across institutions. One of these projects was a collaboration between Aalborg University and VIA University College. As such, Tanmay Chaturvedi and Mette Hedegaard Thomsen from Aalborg University collaborated with Torben L. Skovhus from VIA University College. Together, they seek to combat microbial souring mechanisms and tested natural antibiotics for corrosion prevention. It was a collaboration between microbiology knowledge and natural antibiotics that came together to solve reservoir souring and the derived corrosion. Tanmay Chaturvedi, Postdoc at Aalborg University, highlights their three main learning experiences:

“First, understanding the convergence of interdisciplinary research areas, second, working with an ambitious – but achievable – plan, third, how to proceed once our hypothesis has been proved – what the future options are and how to ‘get our results out there’ and share it.”

Tanmay Chaturvedi further tells that collaboration is allowing them to find new innovative ways to tackle problems within the industry as the extracts from the plant in question have never been used before for corrosion prevention.

Life after Radical Innovation
The Radical Innovation Sprint of 2018 may be completed but the ideas, the knowledge and the perspectives that have been shared leaves a footprint in the research community involved. Tanmay Chaturvedi and his project partners, Torben L. Skovhus and Mette H Thomsen, are taking their radical idea to the conference ISMOS7 in Canada in June.  Furthermore, they will be publishing their work in a journal and seek a patent and funding for further research. Many of the other researchers also have great ambitions to take their idea further.

At DHRTC, the Close out day marked the end of RIS 2018 but also the beginning of RIS 2019. The Close Out Day offered discussions and dialogue with researcher’s from a broad range of fields and disciplines and new ideas and collaborations may be born in the aftermath. Whether similar radical ideas will arise and be submitted to RIS 2019 is yet to be seen. Nonetheless, DHRTC Technology Maturation and the RIS 2019 team is always ready to engage in the maturing and shaping of ideas.
