We are looking for colleagues who wants to challenge the way oil recovery happens today

The Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (DHRTC), at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applicants for two postdoc positions  on investigations of selected enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods and their mechanisms relevant for Danish North Sea. The period of employment is two years.

You will be a part of the core flooding team, who participates in a growing cross-disciplinary research program, involving several researchers at DTU and other Danish universities, research institutes and the industry. Our team share laboratories with the Analytical Chemistry team.

The focus of our team is on recovery processes in tight chalk testing different concepts and methods that will be developed at the centre . Reservoir core plugs, crude oil and unique field and laboratory data sets are available to increase to applicability of the research. In order to mention a few of the processes currently being investigated is Smart Water flooding, surfactant treatment and solvent flooding. Besides performing regular flooding experiments, we also perform core flooding experiments in the CT scanner to be able to follow the recovery process in situ. Installation of new equipment such as a SEM with QEM scan, a micro CT scanner and an almost nano CT scanner will take place during the autumn, and the equipment is available for inclusion in our research projects.

Responsibilities and tasks
The research projects aim to find EOR methods which has a potential in the Danish part of the North Sea. Your task is to run core flooding experiments with the focus either on 1) microbial EOR (MEOR), and/or 2) core flooding experiments run in the CT scanner, which cover a range of recovery processes such as low concentration surfactant flooding, and gas flooding and WAG. You should be prepared to engage in linking your research with the activities in the team, but also the projects carried out in relation to geology, analytical chemistry, surface chemistry, and reservoir modelling and simulations.

In relation to the project on MEOR, which combines different disciplines:

  • The project will use water samples from the reservoir to investigate and select the MEOR candidates. The aim is to propose potential MEOR strategies.
  • You collaborate closely with another postdoc working on microbiology aiming good MEOR candidates. Therefore, you should expect to expand your knowledge to microbiology as well. The success of the project will depend on your communication and collaboration skills. 

In relation to the work on selected recovery processes in the CT scanner

  • You aim to investigate whether the selected EOR methods have a potential use. A part of it is the overall efficiency demonstrated in the core flooding, but also the mechanisms is of utmost importance to be able to model and upscale. The CT scanner will support your research.
  • You will collaborate with a postdoc carrying out research on image analysis on the CT scanner results to further develop the methodology for core flooding in the CT scanner.

Qualifications
We prefer that  you are an expert in constructing, running and analysing different experiments, especially core flooding experiments under reservoir conditions. Experience with live oil, measurements of fluid properties, and measurements core plug porosity and permeability would be a plus. In relation to core preparation, you should be knowledgeable about the theory behind your choice of methods. Being open to new impressions is an advantage as you will engage in collaboration with the members of the core flooding team as well as training new people, but also to supervise or co-supervise students.

Your background would require several elements:

  • PhD degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, petroleum engineering, or other relevant areas;
  • Excellent laboratory skills, especially experience in core flooding experiments;
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of flows and fluid distribution in porous media;
  • Interest in applied research;
  • Skills in mathematics and physics;
  • Knowledge about microbiology would be an advantage for the MEOR focused work;
  • Experience with CT scanners would be a plus;
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment;
  • Good communication skills in English;
  • Thorough, focused and hardworking person;

Salary and terms of employment
The salary and appointment terms of the Postdoc position is based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
