The Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applicants for a position on investigations within the area of rock mechanics and near wellbore flow. Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU is established by the Danish Underground Consortium and DTU. As part of a national strategy on oil and gas, the research centre is an ambitious, targeted effort to improve recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea. The first of the cross-disciplinary flagship programmes of the centre is advanced water flooding of the Dan, Halfdan, and Kraka oil fields. In this project the radial water jet drilling (RJD) technology will be investigated and tested for a sustainable and efficient productivity enhancement in low productive wells. Radial jet drilling uses the power of a focused fluid jet, which is capable of drilling multiple laterals of about 100 m length out of the main well and thereby stimulating the well with full control on the operational parameters like initial direction of the lateral, length, fluid pressure etc.

Responsibilities and tasks
The position will be an integrated part of the advanced water flooding programme with the focus on improving well flow performance. The project involves laboratory experiments, numerical simulations and field studies. These will be investigated and tested for a sustainable and efficient productivity / injectivity enhancement. The project will be paired with different tasks addressing hole stability and fines production. Numerical modelling and experiments on measuring an additional set of failure criteria will be performed. This will result in an effective design of the experiments addressing the sustainability of jetted laterals. Experiments on specimens will be performed to specify the stability criteria of the laterals under high-pressure conditions. In addition, the effect of jetting on mechanical properties of the rock matrix will be investigated at the core scale on various rock samples. The laboratory experiments will be conducted at GEO lab. The analysis of hydraulic data from the quarry test and the wells will be done in close collaboration with Total. Different numerical models will be utilised for testing and studying the effectiveness of the RJD technology for increasing productivity in the Danish chalk fields. The researcher may assist to set-up experiments. He/She will participate in a growing cross-disciplinary research program, involving several researchers at DTU and other Danish universities, research institutes, and industry.

Qualifications

  • M.Sc. or PhD degree in mechanical engineering or other relevant areas;
  • Profound Knowledge of the fundamentals of flow and geomechanics in porous media;
  • Previous experience in using geomechanical models (e.g. Abaqus) is highly preferred.
  • Also previous experience in rock mechanic experiments is preferred.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment as an independent researcher;
  • Good writing and communication skills in English;

Salary and terms of employment
The salary and appointment terms of the position is based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 1.5 years with the possibility of an extension.

Located at The Technical University of Denmark research groups at the University of Copenhagen, Aarhus University, Aalborg University and the Geological Survey of Greenland and Denmark will be affiliated with the Centre.
