Can you bridge the gap between chemical engineers and computer scientists? Can you see yourself working in the interface between performing CT-scans on geological samples and computational modelling of the system? Then you might become an important player at our Recovery Processes research group at the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (DHRTC). DHRTC is a global centre from which researchers can access important data and knowledge about the oil fields, and our research programmes are orchestrated from the centre in partnership with several research groups from our partner institutions. DHRTC is funded with 1 billion kroner (~134 mio. €) over a 10 year period.

You will be part of both DHRTC and the Section for Image Analysis and Computer Graphics at DTU Compute allowing for scientific collaboration. The section works on a broad range of topics ranging from biomedical imaging, over industrial vision to computer graphics. The section has around 50 part- and full time employees and engages in both applied and basic research.

The 2-year Postdoc position address current and future needs in the acquisition and analysis of CT data in the context of DHRTC, which will drive the research questions. You will drive and facilitate the collaboration between the image section and DHRTC.

Your team and responsibilities
The Recovery Processes research group at DHRTC pursues research programs to develop and demonstrate new ways to improve oil recovery through injection of various substances into the oil reservoirs. As a major part of the development and screening process, CT-scans of chalk samples during injection of these substances are performed to both visualize and model the behaviour in situ. Further, DHRTC has recently acquired a micro-CT, a nano-CT, and a SEM to complement the medical CT scanner currently used.

The successful candidate will bridge the gap between the chemical engineers performing the experiments and the computer scientists modelling the systems, and is thus a key component to the success of the team. The CT-scan brings additional information of the recovery mechanisms taking place inside the porous chalk rock. The main task is to visualize and extract information of the recovery processes from CT-scans on different scales and make the information accessible to others.

A large potential exist for optimizing and applying existing knowledge of reconstruction and acquisition techniques of tomographic images, e.g. partial angle reconstruction to increase time resolution. The use of high resolution static scans as a prior for reconstruction could also be of interest.

Currently mainly porosity and saturation is under investigation in the dynamic systems. Other areas of interest are contact angle measurements to determine wetting properties, and dynamical properties under stress or dissolution.
Analysis of SEM images may be used to confirm or investigate materials on an even finer level.

DTU also hosts DTU Imaging Center with several micro CT scanners, and QIM which is the centre for image data-analysis for the synchrotron MAX IV. This leads to broad areas of scientific collaboration and opportunities for professional discussions.

Qualifications
The successful applicant should have a strong background (PhD degree or equivalent) in image analysis and have a deep understanding of both CT-scanning and tomographic techniques. Further, the candidate must have an operational knowledge of co-registration techniques. Experience with SEM is a plus.

As both the work and DHRTC are strongly cross-disciplinary the candidate should have the will and ability to work in such an environment. Ability and interest in co-supervision of BSc, Msc, and PhD students is expected.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The centre will develop deep, new understanding within these disciplines with a line-of-sight to application.
