Write shortly about your background
My bachelor and master degrees are from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. For approximately 10 years I worked at Det Norske Veritas (DNV GL) in a position that required multidisciplinary skills related to hydrodynamics, mooring systems and structural analyses of offshore structures (floaters and fixed platforms). In 2012 I was promoted to Coordinator of Engineering of Consultancy Services for Petrobras (GIEN).In 2015 I became Senior Engineer and one year later I decided to come to DTU for the PhD degree.
Present your project
By monitoring an offshore platform, acceleration measurements from a few locations at the topside will be used for estimating the actual stress in any point of the structure by using Operational Modal Analysis (OMA). The fatigue damage based on the actual stress will be evaluated and compared to the nominal damage calculated in the design phase based on standards. It is expected that actual damage is reduced since the nominal damage accounts with different safety factors in order to be more conservative. During a monitoring period, a correlation model between the current environmental conditions acting on the structure and the actual damage will be developed. This correlation tool will be used for prediction of the future and past fatigue and it is assumed that it will result in a significantly smaller fatigue damage. As a result this can be used for the fatigue life extension of offshore structures and lead to significant savings in relation to the inspection planning of the platforms.
What do you expect the major challenges in your area of study will be?
Nowadays there are models widely used for prediction of the fatigue damage over time. However, they overestimate the fatigue damage with the use of safety factors. The major challenge will probably be the implementation of the proposed technique at different offshore structures and to gain acceptance from by industry.
How do you plan to contribute in solving these problems?
It is very important to have a close interaction with the industry through good communication, frequently meetings, attending to Conferences/Seminars, publishing technical papers, etc.
What are your expectations for your future career?
I plan to get back to the industry after I finish my PhD studies. The Oil and Gas field is an option, but I would also be motivated for new challenges since the knowledge I am acquiring related to structural analysis could be applied in many other segments of the industry.
